Background & Style
Based in Duncan, British Columbia, Scudder is a celebrated member of the Vancouver Island Sculptors Guild. His sculptural work utilizes bold, abstract elements in stone, including onyx, quartz, jasper, and marble. Scudder has a deep reverence for the inherent strength and natural beauty of his materials. He strives to maintain the integrity of his pieces in their natural form, selectively altering them to bring his creative vision to life.

Signature Subjects
Scudder has a special affinity for the diverse fauna and marine ecosystems of the West Coast. His striking, organic sculptures bring sea creatures and woodland animals to vivid life. Signature motifs include intricate marine life, such as his celebrated octopus sculpture, which won second place at the Sculpture Splash at Gorge Park Pavilion in Victoria.

Scudder’s exceptional work regularly appears in major regional juried exhibitions and galleries across Vancouver Island. His accolades include a notable second-place finish at the Sculpture Splash in Esquimalt, and his sculptures are frequently featured and displayed at community hubs like the Station Street Gallery. He remains a beloved, active contributor to the Pacific Northwest’s vibrant fine arts community.

Sculpting Process

Stone sculpting is a slow and deliberate process where each piece emerges through careful carving, shaping, and refinement. Working directly with natural stone, the artist reveals form, texture, and movement while respecting the character and history within the material itself.
